November Coin of the Month – 1993 Australia Kookaburra

The Australia Silver Kookaburra is one of only a few silver coins in the world to feature a new design each year of issue. These annual changes, combined with very limited production by the Perth Mint, have made the Australian Kookaburra one of the most beloved silver coins of all time.

Minted in a stunning “reverse-proof,” deep cameo finish, the 1993 reverse was designed by Alex Lumsden and John Bergdahl. It depicts a mother kookaburra returning to her nest with a lizard to feed her hungry chicks.

The obverse of the coin features the iconic portrait of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II of England, created by artist Raphael Maklouf.

The background of the Kookaburra is frosted while the images themselves are rendered in a mirror finish, making them catch the light beautifully.

A 1993 pure silver Kookaburra can be very difficult to locate, much less in perfect Mint State 70 condition, making this a very special coin for the discriminating collector indeed.
